The mountain range of which this Peak is a member, is, perhaps, the very sister of that lone and mysterious ridge whom we discussed yesterday. The same loneliness, and the same melancholy, brood upon its summit and slopes; the same ideas in a different form impress themselves on the traveler's mind. Here, too, are the marks of ruin and decay--but they are the marks of a young civilization or of a race still younger perhaps than those Indian tribes whose ancient fortresses are found in so many parts of these mountains. It is remarkable that the deepest moral impressions seem to attach themselves, as well as the most durable physical ones, to the valleys. It is not only the colors of the rock and of the foliage, but the hues of the sky and the atmosphere, that are repeated in the river or the lake at their base. The spirit that haunts them is more enduringly portrayed than any changefulness of natural object. The same ominous legend has a deeper significance when we find it the moral of a forsaken home than when it only darkens the story of a ruined temple. The same dull echo of the storm that proves so tedious to the ear, yet fails to satisfy the soul, may suggest a thought of eternity when heard reverberated among the deserted chambers of a human heart.
