Initially, visitors were hesitant, but as time passed, they became increasingly violent, cutting her clothes off, and even injuring her with a knife. Another piece that explores these themes is The House with the Ocean View, presented in 2002. In this work, Abramovic lived in a gallery space for 12 days, during which time she ate only honey and drank only water. The space was bare apart from three elevated platforms of different heights, on which she slept, meditated, or looked out the window. Visitors were allowed to enter the space but were asked to remain silent.

To many, this piece may seem mundane or even tedious, but it is precisely this meditative quality that Abramovic is trying to convey. By reducing everything to the bare essentials, including her own existence, she is forcing us to confront our own mortality and the fragility of the human condition.

In Imponderabilia (1977), Abramovic stood naked in a narrow doorway with her collaborator, Ulay, also naked. Visitors were forced to squeeze through the gap between their naked bodies, and in doing so, confront their own physical and sexual boundaries. One can see this as a feminist work, challenging notions of modesty and femininity, but it also speaks to a broader human experience of sexuality and desire.

In Balkan Erotic Epic (2005), Abramovic explored the mythology and folklore of her native Yugoslavia, using her own body as a canvas for projections of religious icons, monsters, and even phallic symbols. This work is a celebration of the erotic and the taboo, and it shows Abramovic's willingness to embrace both her heritage and her own sexuality in her art.

Art as Transformation

Abramovic's art is not simply about pushing the limits of the human body and exploring social and political issues, but about using art as a transformative experience. In her recent work, 512 Hours, presented at the Serpentine Gallery in London in 2014, Abramovic created an immersive performance space where visitors were invited to participate in various activities, such as drawing, walking, and meditating, under strict rules of silence and discipline.
